In July, Harpreet Uppal MP hosted her first Summer School with young people from our local area. It was a week full of energy, big ideas, and brilliant conversations with future changemakers.
Day 1 began with a session on the role of an MP, following which students heard from the Mayor of Kirklees, Councillor Smaje. And concluded with a discussion and Q&A with Leader of the Council, Cllr Pattison and Cabinet Member for Communities and Environment, Cllr Pinnock.
A packed Day 2, included a visit to the Houses of Parliament where students heard from Debbie Abrahams on her role as an MP and Chair of the Work and Pensions Select Committee, followed by a talk form Jess Phillips on her role as Minister for Safeguarding. The students then visited 10 Downing Street, met Lindsey Hoyle, Speaker of the House, Deputy Prime Minister Angela Rayner, and local MPs Paul Davies and Simon Lightwood. The day ended with an MP panel with Bayo Alba, Yuan Yang, Keir Mather and Kirith Entwistle.
Day 3 included a presentation and tour of Cummins Turbo Technologies in Huddersfield, a meeting with Sam Dainty, CEO of Huddersfield Town Foundation, learning how charities play and essential part in the community. The day ended with a presentation from Kirklees Local TV.
Day 4 began with a visit to BBC Leeds, followed by a presentation from Fatima Khan Shah, West Yorkshire’s inclusivity champion and Deputy Mayor for Policing and Crime, Alison Lowe.
The morning of Day 5, the students had a tour of the ACCU stadium and in the afternoon presented their own ideas for campaigns to friends and family.
